The problem with mirrorless
Someday we’ll call it a camera with interchangeable lenses.
35 is a lonesome focal length
A 35mm pushes backgrounds away and magnifies foregrounds.
Completely covered with graffiti
Old age is the ultimate new cool. Be a little bit of kindness and friendship walking around in the world.
Heaven
Heaven is out here, working in Odessa.
Wildly kind and kindly wild
How do we remember a place?
Burgers, Fries, and Onion Rings
To see a photograph, we must forget that we’re viewing one. To see photography, we must acknowledge mood and atmosphere.
Studio
A note is a few words in a sentence or two; a picture is an individual frame, and a finding blends text with imagery.
Influence
Despair is progress misinterpreted. Focus on what you enjoy more than the attention it brings. Make a stranger laugh.
The Rule of Thirds
View something, then around and past it.
Education
The kids are smart and will do just fine. It’s grown soreheads like me who I worry about.
Simple Italianate
Simple Italianate houses fascinate me. The City of Cincinnati describes Italianates (1860 - 1890) as two or three stories high, rectangular in plan, with low-pitched roofs. They are brick with metal, stone, or wood ornamentation. A distinctive feature is a cornice. Their design is thin with tall windows, similar to 19th-century commercial buildings.
Compression and Separation
Lens selection is a creative choice made before stepping outside. A 50mm is how a photographer sees; a 35mm is how one thinks, and a 135mm is how one sees and thinks while driving.
How it all began
If it hand’t been for West Texas, I probably wouldn’t have done monovchromramatic photography. If it hand’t been for school, I probably wouldn’t have done monovchromramatic photography. If it hadn’t been for the 1990s, I probably wouldn’t have done monovchromramatic photography.
Eyesore
In saying very little, I stood closer to what I had to say and encountered it before I knew what it was. Brag about eyesores if there’s almost nothing nice to say.
High Lonesome
High lonesome is a one-room bus stop near desert mountains.
On playing records
I love records. Records are time capsules, and I love records that sound fresh across time and go on to inspire new groundbreaking records.
I’ve been there
Why do we need a photo to explain a place?
Proximity
It’s difficult to see something from too close or too far.
Abstract
In proximity to everything, the thought of everything worsening is a misinterpretation of how far we’ve come. Each photo changes photography. There’s a point where enough is enough and plenty near gratitude. It’s hard to become impoverished in a free society.
Odessa
After a railway had reached El Paso in the 1880s, a sleepy cattle town grew outward across a dusty plain, Grant and Texas avenues, a place changed by energy, where effort and determination resulted in houses and opportunities.
