The Old Truck

There is a certain kind of comfort in using things that take their time.

Modern gear is always trying to help you out. It wants to focus faster, correct the shadows, and make sure everything is sharp from edge to edge. Most days, that is fine. But after a while, all that help starts to feel a bit noisy. You spend more time managing the electronics than you do looking at what is right in front of you.

That is why some cameras just stay on the shelf, year after year.

They might be slow. The screens are small or not there at all, the batteries do not last like they used to, and you have to do all the thinking yourself. But when you pick one up, it just settles into your hands. The weight is right, the dials click where they are supposed to, and you know exactly what it is going to do.

It feels a lot like driving an old truck. It rides a little rougher, and you have to pay attention to how it sounds and moves. It does not have any shortcuts. But it gets you out the door, and it makes the trip feel real.

You do not need the newest thing to go out and make pictures. Sometimes you just need a tool that gets out of your way, lets you slow down a little bit, and lets you pay attention to the road you are already on.
